" Where there's a will there's a way "

A major new reference guide for Alsatian students of English and for Americans or other English speaking people interested in learning Alsatian German or in Alsace (France).

This new comparative bilingual practical guide enables Alsatian German speakers to put their knowledge of German, French and their own dialects to good use when learning basic English, helping them to fix English words and expressions in their memory! What is more, it reveals many surprising family relationships and similarities between the two languages which readers will find fascinating to explore.

Moreover English speaking communities, interested in Alsace, will also find a new way to discover Alsace and to learn Alsatian German through English!

It contains:

  • Hundreds of examples in which the two languages are identical, in whole or in parts;
  • Expressions in current use, idiomatic turns of phrases and picturesque proverbs;
  • Anglicisms in Alsatian German;
  • Notes on etymology and grammar;
  • Comparative notes and items of historical interest.

Practical Guide of Alsatian conversation for English speakers in the world !

by Paul ADOLF , Ph.D.

Author of the dictionary

“Learning English through Alsatian”.

Did you ever visit Alsace? Did you ever hear the Alsatian language? How many English speaking persons would like to understand and speak Alsatian to get more familiar with its population and way of life, traditions, etc.!

Here’s good news for you! Yes! You can understand and practise the Alsatian dialect through English!

Coming after my dictionary, this new book “Let’s learn Alsatian “ – to be published early in November 2002 combines practice of Alsatian conversation and Alsatian grammar in a single volume of more than 700 pages!

Its price: 33 Euros (postage not included). You can already order it!

The book is originally intended for Alsatians learning English but can also be used the other way round by learners of Alsatian !

Knowing English wherever you are, you’ll be able to remember and practise everyday useful sentences and establish genuine linguistic family relationships or genetic links!

Your companion with 95 topics from A to Z is a new gateway to Alsatian – whether a beginner or advanced student – and familiarizes you with words and sentence patterns of everyday conversation. I most often refer to the dialect of Strasbourg but also include other important variations (north and south).

Every topic is illustrated with short dialogues often ended by a delicious Alsatian saying or proverb! At the same time all those extraordinary and unexpected similarities will remind you of your ancestral roots, object of your legitimate pride!

At the end of many sentences you’ll find a number referring you to a useful grammar item to be found – among the 150 items – in the second part of this new and simple practice book!

It would be a shame for an English learner of Alsatian to welcome a similar Alsatian word, idiom or sentence without associating it to its English partner.

There is an index of the English, French, Alsatian keywords (with pronunciation) at the end of this handbook!  Have a look at an example (n°18. Traffic) illustrating my method!
