Celebrating the European language millenium
Dear friends, Having pioneered continuing education ( specially language learning for all adults ) in Bas-Rhin's medium-sized towns or cities (Alsace) - and organized German and English courses for young people (6 to 11 years) - as early as 1966, our Association UPO keeps on - owing to its members' regular attendance at classes - showing dynamic action, endurance as well at the Obernai based Centre as at its UPO Bas -Rhin local branches : evidencing thereby - and supported by a sound conviction - a lasting personal commitment rather than empty words. Indeed we go on arousing the large public's interest by asking for moderate fees in Alsace, a once hotly disputed border region of France whose eventful and tragic history, its still widely spoken old vernaculars , its rich patrimony and culture and finally its European vocation still deserve to be far better known than in the past here and abroad so that public opinion is no longer based on prejudiced information. There is more to it. In a world where knowledge and the need for new abilities and professional competence are growing daily (in particular as regards computer science and Internet), let us make it clear how lucky Alsatians are , being consummate " adapters " - wherever they are - and having a manysided vision - to be aware of other cultures and ways of life ; last but not least they serve as multilingual links and mediators. My watchword " European and multilingual vocation of Alsace " comes at the right moment : i was always standing up for unity through the diversity of languages, vernaculars and cultures. Plurilingualism in Alsace is unlike what some " famous " pedagogues and regional writers mean : it is not merely French , Alsatian and standard German (This is bilingualism in my opinion) but includes at least English appreciated by adults and young people as the auxiliary planetary language. Moreover our learners are aware that learning several new languages simultaneously can be facilitated through genetically related languages. So let us promote diversity and genuine multilingualism, a key to a common patrimony , a better understanding and communication facing new challenges in the 21st century. We express our thanks to the Regional and local Official Services, to the schools that encourage us to persist in following the right track ! So U.P.O. will resume its activities in the near future. Looking forward to greeting you at the various scheduled meetings ! See you soon !
